5 Criteria to Teach You the Right Choice of Test Leads and Probes
Anyone who has ever made measurements and tests knows that accurate data depends on the design and measurement capabilities of the test instrument. But few realize that the design quality, manufacturing process, fit and performance specifications of test leads and connectors have the same importance as test instruments. Next PIN needle manufacturer Dongguan Qunhua here to focus on the five criteria for the correct selection of test leads and probes.
1. Security
As with the requirements for power supplies, instrumentation test leads and probes, because of their direct contact with high voltages, must meet stringent safety ratings, in particular the requirements of the international IEC1010 voltages and categories, i.e., CAT I, CAT II, CAT III, or CAT IV. Other IEC1010 requirements relate to transient testing, dielectric withstand voltages, or tests to verify that the product has adequate insulation and meets the requirements for current, electrical clearance, exposed metal probes, and shock resistance. insulation and meet requirements for current, electrical clearance, exposed metal probes and shock resistance. Good quality test probes, along with important personal protective equipment such as gloves and eye protection, form part of the personal protective measures defined in the NFPA 70E standard.
2. Robustness and durability
Quality test cords and splices will not deteriorate in performance due to everyday friction such as pulling, pressing and piercing. Test cords should have well-designed, stress-resistant jackets on both ends. Test probes should be hardened metal that can withstand repeated connections and transmit accurate data every time. Specially manufactured, multi-stranded, tinned beryllium copper conductors provide flexibility, long-term durability, excellent electrical conductivity, and accuracy compared to less expensive materials. Other factors include the quality of the internal soldering of the probes and connectors and the temperature range of the material.
3. Design performance and indicators
It is important that test probes and test clips are designed for comfort. Comfortable, easy-to-grip gripping surfaces help keep the probe securely in your hand, and strong spring-loaded clamps ensure a strong connection. Connections should be easy and mating parts should slide together effortlessly without stress. Contacts on good quality fittings should be nickel or gold plated machined brass connections, not just cast brass. The use of gold-plated contacts provides accuracy and oxidation resistance, resulting in a long-lasting, safe and reliable connection.
The design index of the test line and probe should be consistent with the matching test instrument, if its index is smaller than the test instrument, then the real value of the instrument is greatly reduced. For example, the oscilloscope bandwidth is 100M, matching oscilloscope probe bandwidth is only 50M, then the oscilloscope becomes 50M.
4. High-performance applications
From fine, lightweight probes with spring-loaded probes and for testing electronic circuits, all the way to sharp stainless steel probes and rugged probes for industrial use, today's probes are designed with different applications in mind. For example, single point probes are the most common form of probe. Most meters are supplied with a single point test lead, which is quite useful for a wide range of test applications. Sharp probes are the best tools for measuring very small contacts on high-density circuit boards. Although they can be easily damaged, the probes can usually be re-sharpened because there is no plating on them.
Probes with retractable probes are connected to very fine diameter stainless steel wires, which, except for the very end of the probe, are covered with an insulating layer to prevent damage to the chip from short circuits caused by inadvertent contact. The hook-and-clamp probes are suitable for connections that remain in place for easy off-hand operation. Different sizes of test clips are available for easy testing of IC chips. IC test clips are ideal for probing multiple pins on an IC chip, and they are perfect for finding one of many chip wires. SMD probes allow for precise spot testing on surface mounted boards (SMDs), which requires the use of very fine and sharp probes to accurately make contact with points on very small boards.
5. Test line connection connector
According to the standard, safety and practical needs, test cable connectors have various applications and standard plugs and sockets. For example, oscilloscopes are BNC connectors, multimeters are 4mm banana head, spectrum analyzers are N-type head, etc., different applications have different connectors, in order to match each other, there are a variety of adapters (couplers), adapters (adapters), adapter cables, connecting wires, branching cables, etc., on the market.
